Portrait photography

In most cases all photographers usually have one objective in mind. The catch of any photographer is with the beautiful photographs that they take. Simple as it may appear, portrait photography is not as simple at it may sound. On the other hand, the art is of photography is achievable and one can utilize the following tactics to get to the epitome of portrait photography.

1. The Perspective

One can make the necessary changes on the perspective in order to ensure that the camera is at the recommended level of the eye. Alter the perspective by moving the angle that you are using. The basic idea is to keep experimenting on the best angle.

2. The Eyes

In portrait photography, directions of the eyes are very important. It is not ideal to look straight in to the camera when taking a photo. Though it works, it would come out better if the subject is at an angle. Though this requires a lot of care in order to get the perfect picture.

3. The Frame

Portrait Photography requires that one keeps his or her eyes focused within the frame. Incase the subject is holding on to an object it is essential that you capture the entire view properly. The object held is a diversion from the main point of interest which is a good thing.

4. Composition Regulations

The composition regulations that are made in portrait photography are followed and in many times broken. It is important for one to get acquainted with the rules and pushing them makes the whole concept of portrait photography even more interesting. It is thus essential for one to learn the regulations and how they should be used.

5. The Lighting

Lighting is a very essential element of portrait photography. Lighting revolves around ones creativity. The light can be played around with until you are most comfortable with it. There is no standard measure for the light.

6. Move the subject around

Removing the subject from that safe haven and moving them around is fun. Portrait photography is very creative and the options are limitless. Simply make the subjects move and add creative things on them such as clothes and surroundings.

7. Make use of props

One skill of portrait photography is utilizing props. This means adding something to the photo that takes the attention away from the main subject. Ensure that the prop does not over shadow the main object of the picture. Just allow the prop to be a part of the photo.

The options of being guru in the art of portrait photography are endless. The whole concept surrounds creativity and imagination.

Overall portrait winner of the SWPP 2011 20×16 international competition

I was extremely fortunate and won the overall portrait category in this years international SWPP 20×16 competition in London. I was very pleased to also achieve merit awards with all of the images that I entered. It was a fantastic experience and has set me up for the year ahead. I have so many great plans for this year and can’t wait to get the ball rolling. Here is the image that achieved me the award…

Presenting seminars in London

I will be presenting a number of seminars at this years SWPP convention again. After the last two years of successful wedding seminars with photographer friend Jon Jenkins we will be presenting a superclass and members day on wedding photography.

I will also be presenting a seminar on ‘Thinking outside the box’ where I will talk about my ideas as an artist and how I approach photography. In this seminar I will also be performing a live photo shoot around the hotel.
